Reconnaissance and Surveillance
General Dynamics Canada has a proud history providing Reconnaissance and Surveillance Mission Equipment Packages (MEP) to Allied Armies. The Coyote was fielded in 1996, integrating advanced sensors into the world’s first 24 hour multi-spectral surveillance system.
The Coyote has been in operational theatres ever since; in Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor, Haiti, and Afghanistan, under Canadian, British and American commands.
Concurrently, GD Canada developed the Reconnaissance MEP for the DARPA/USMC Reconnaissance, Surveillance and targeting Vehicle, the Reconnaissance Surveillance and Targeting Vehicle, as a smaller variant of the Coyote MEP for stealthy, mobile reconnaissance operations carried out by Special Operations Forces.
Additionally, work has been done to integrate third dimensional sensors provided by unmanned systems such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Unmanned Ground Vehicles, to fill gaps in the coverage and provide continuous surveillance in the dirty, dull and dangerous missions less suitable to manned reconnaissance.
The current emphasis of GD Canada’s developmental efforts is on the production of timely “Actionable Intelligence”. Advanced collection planning, clever collation techniques, image processing and fusion as well as efficient dissemination mechanisms ensure that the product is responsive to the needs of the Commander.
